About Bryony Shearmur

Cheap Sheets And Soiled Smalls is a series of 9 hand embroidered essays and letters completed between May 2016 and March 2019.

Each piece is inspired by a specific moment, person or incident, and looks at the themes that have accompanied me through my life.
Love, sex, money, men, health, the physical body, life vs fantasy, being an artist, being a woman, aging, beauty, spiritualism, truth, justice and purpose.

My artistic practice has always included multiple mediums.
When I was a child, so the story goes, I would appear at the bottom of the stairs each night with news that I was going to be a painter, an opera singer, an architect, maybe a ballerina, farmer, dog walker, dragon slayer, rock star, designer, traveler.... And the list went on.

I tried them all and loved every moment. But the things that stayed constant were the storytelling, the truth seeking and the need to be creating, even if it was just a pile of rocks on the top of a hill.

Three things have remained constant. My love of textiles, the written word and photographs. This body of work is a marriage of all three.
